Designed by Ingo Maurer in the 1970s and commercialized in 1977, the “Uchiwa” wall lamps reflect the designer’s pursuit of a softer, warmer light. As he told The New York Times in 1977, “I was looking for something, anything, that would produce a soft light.”

During this exploration, he met Tetsuo Shigeki in Japan, who introduced him to uchiwa, traditional Japanese fans made of rice paper and bamboo. Inspired by this discovery, Ingo Maurer began creating lighting fixtures by assembling multiple uchiwa of varying sizes, some composed of more than seventy hand fans.

These pieces embody a search for calm and warmth, while also expressing a dialogue between modern design and traditional craftsmanship.
